4 tips for whipping those closets into shape

by Susan Gear

In a perfect world, all linen closets would look like this

I happen to love linens. There’s just something about hanging a new towel or putting on a new pillow sham — they’re such small indulgences, but they can make the whole room seem fresh and new.

The problem is where to put all of those linens when they are not in use. Evidently I’m not the only one with this problem, because the blogosphere this week is full of tips for organizing your linens.

If your house doesn’t have a linen closet (like mine), Andrea Dekker has some ideas for making do. For instance, instead of bulky blankets that are tough to store, she suggests layering the bed with multiple thin blankets that can be reduced as the weather gets warmer. Quilts and comforters can stay on the bed year-round; in the warmer months they just stay folded down at the foot to provide a decorative touch. And if you don’t have drawers for storing extra pillows, try clipping them to a trouser hanger and hanging them in the closet. (Simple Organized Living)

Natalie Wright caught my eye with a picture of her linen closet, which she describes as “itty bitty, and a whole lotta mess.” Natalie says she loves buying towel sets for her house guests, so she came up with a “super cheap” way to hang multiple sets on the inside of a door. Her solution is attractive, space-saving, and costs just $5 if you take the DIY approach. (Organized Mom)

One more linen closet tip before we move on: If you’re a collector of sheets, you know how matching sets tend to get jumbled in the closet or drawer. Eva Wallace has a simple solution for solving this problem. “Store bedlinen sets inside one of their own pillowcases and there will be no more hunting through piles for a match,” she writes. Brilliant! (Especially at 3am after one of the kids has had an accident.) (Clutter Control Freak Blog)

Now that we’ve whipped the linen closet into shape, let’s talk about the kids’ bedroom closets. Spring is coming (yay!), and that means it will soon be time to rotate the coats and sweaters in favor of shorts and tee shirts. Here’s a post to help you make the big switch “in such a way that you don’t lose track of items for which you’ve paid good money.” The key is keeping an inventory so you know what fits, what doesn’t — and what you’ll need to buy. At the end of this post, you’ll find free printables to help you do just that. (Organizing Junkie)

That’s all for this installment. Happy organizing!
